AREA GUIDE

Central Ehime (Chuyo)

Explore imposing hilltop castles, iconic bath houses, vermillion shrines, otherworldly karst formations, and the tallest mountain in western Japan.

Getting Around

Matsuyama is the main transport hub of the central Chuyo region. The city has a variety of transport options and convenient connections to other regions, making it an ideal base for exploring the prefecture. Railway lines run along the coast to cities such as Iyo, but only go as far as Toon in the interior of the region. You will need to drive, take the bus, or use a sightseeing taxi to reach inland and remote destinations such as Tobe or Kumakogen in the mountains.

Renting a Car

Car rental companies have many branches in Matsuyama, especially around the main transport centers—Matsuyama Airport, JR Matsuyama Station, and Matsuyama Sightseeing Port. Outside of Matsuyama there are a few outlets in the cities of Toon and Iyo. To rent a car, you will need a valid license, an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) from your country of residence, and be at least 18 years old.
