Getting Around
The Shimanami Kaido runs through parts of eastern Ehime, connecting the prefecture to Hiroshima, via a string of islands in the Seto Inland Sea. It can be traveled by car, by bus, by bicycle, and on foot. Ferries also operate in eastern Ehime, providing transport links to islands such as Oshima, Hakatajima and Omishima. Rail and bus services connect major towns along the coast from Imabari to Shikokucho. The mountainous interior is best explored by car or bicycle.
Renting a Car
There are car rental outlets in the major cities of Imabari, Saijo, Niihama, and Shikokucho. They are typically located near key transportation hubs, such as train stations. To rent a car, you will need a valid license, an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) from your country of residence, and be at least 18 years old.
Renting a Bicycle
There are many bicycle rental stores including specialist outlets along the Shimanami Kaido in eastern Ehime. Most offer rentals by the hour, day, or longer, and some allow you to drop off your bike at a different location. E-bikes are convenient for exploring hilly island interiors and the more mountainous parts of the region.
